Parts That Commonly Need Attention
Inlet and outlet fittings, baffles, filters, risers and lids can all develop problems. On mechanical treatment or dosing systems, pumps, floats, controls and aeration equipment add other possible failure points. Repairs must match the installed design and manufacturer requirements.
Material Changes the Assessment
Concrete can crack, deteriorate or leak at seams. Fiberglass and polyethylene can suffer shell damage, deformation or damaged fittings. Material alone does not determine repairability. Structural condition, access and the applicable repair method all matter.
Groundwater Can Enter Through a Leak
A failed seal can let wastewater out or groundwater in. In wet Tallahassee conditions, incoming water may keep the system overloaded even after a household reduces its use. An unusually high tank level needs investigation rather than automatic repeat pumping.
Repair or Replacement?
A localized component fault may be repairable. Unsafe walls, extensive deterioration or recurring structural issues may favor replacement. Replacing a tank alone and replacing the entire tank-and-field system are different scopes; establish the approval pathway before digging.
Check Approvals Before Regulated Repairs
Check sewer availability and whether the parcel is in the Wakulla Basin Management Action Plan area or a springs priority focus area. Nitrogen-reducing treatment requirements depend on the location, lot and permit category. New installation, modification and repair can follow different pathways; have DEP confirm the scope for the exact address. Florida Rule 62-6.015(5) directs the agency to make every effort to issue a system-repair permit within 2 working days after receiving the application. This is an effort target, not a guaranteed deadline or the turnaround for a new system. Confirm the permit category and current review schedule with DEP.
Help Describe the Problem
Provide the last service date, age if known, affected fixtures and whether rain or a power interruption preceded the issue. Keep covers secured. Never enter a tank or attempt to inspect its interior yourself.
